McIlwain to Azusa Pacific

Azusa Pacific's nationally-recognized men's basketball program has completed what is arguably the finest recruiting class in the 10-year tenure of Cougar head coach Bill Odell.

Heading the list of newcomers is junior college all-state guard Steve McIlwain (6-2, junior) [See 4-year College page for stats.]

McIlwain averaged 19 points last year as a sophomore at Canada College in Redwood City, Calif., while leading the Colts to a 25-7 record. As a prepster at Fremont (Calif.) Christian High, he was the 1998 CIF Division V MVP when he guided Warriors to 24-7 record.

THIS YEAR: Transfer Steve McIlwain is an All-GSAC candidate . . . Will be one of the Cougars' top offensive threats . . . Shoots the ball very well from the outside . . . Defends intensely . . . Had tremendous success in his JC career . . . Is a good character guy. CANADA COLLEGE: Was the leading scorer last season for a team that featured 4 Division I signees . . . Led Canada in scoring . . . Averaged 19 points (21 in Coast Conference play) . . . Also averaged 5 rebounds and 5 assists . . . Shot 52% from the field . . . Displayed an accurate 3-point shot, connecting at a 45% clip . . . Earned a series of accolades that included an All-American selection . . . Was an All-Coast Conference pick . . . Shot a team best 87% from the free-throw line . . . Poured in a season-high 34 points against Chabot . . . Set flame to the nylon, stroking a season-best 7 threes against San Francisco City . . . Selected to 4 All-Tournament teams. FREMONT CHRISTIAN HIGH: Played 3 varsity seasons under head coach Gary Simas . . . Was named Private School Athletic League MVP junior and senior seasons . . . Averaged 34.7 points his 1998 senior year which led the entire state of California . . . Named California Division V Player of the Year . . . Was named Fremont Christian Athlete of the Year twice.
