Surratt Signs with Miami

Date: April 30, 2002

Oakland (Calif.) Technical High School point guard Armondo Surratt will make it official later today.

Surratt, who committed to Miami last Tuesday but was awaiting his letter-of-intent papers, is signing on the dotted line at school today.

Coach Perry Clark, who is in California, called Surratt this morning to inform the star point guard that he will meet him at school later today.

"I've already signed some papers for Miami and coach Clark's here to see me today," Surratt said. "I'll take care of it today."

It came down to Miami and Georgetown in the end for the 5-foot-11, 165-pounder, and he chose the Hurricanes. He also was recruited by Arkansas, Gonzaga and Oregon State.

Surratt initially signed with Fresno State during the early period but changed his mind after coach Jerry Tarkanian resigned. Fresno State gave Surratt his release, opening up the recruiting floodgates. Regardless, Surratt says he is eligible to play as a true freshman.

As for his reasons for choosing Miami, Surratt said, "Georgetown wanted me, but Miami wanted me more. They just made me feel real comfortable."

Surratt averaged 17 points, nine rebounds, four assists and five steals per game this past season.

He's heard Allen Iverson comparisons from everyone, including coaches and players.

"He's got the same kind of game (as Iverson) but he doesn't shoot as much," said Surratt's coach, Hodari McGavock. "He has those same kind of attributes. He's relentless on the floor and he's quick as a cat. He owns the passing lanes. He's a 90-foot player. It's hard to describe. He can shoot it from outside, there's nothing he can't do. He goes left strong, goes right strong. He penetrates and passes extremely well. He's all plusses. He's going to be something in college."
