SJS Transforms McFadden

It’s not enough that San Jose St coach Phil Johnson calls Richmond native Michael McFadden the answer to losing highly touted freshman Antonio Lawrence to a promising pro career…….In Turkey.Johnson now is reshaping the 6’5 junior into a point guard. “ He’s a very intelligent player, has good instincts and understands everything we put out there,” Johnson said “He picks things up extremely quickand I can’t say that about all of our players. He’s a guy we can count onevery day. I can’t imagine playing this year without him.” As the Spartans work to rebuild a program that hasn’t had a winning season in a decade, McFadden has the chance to hold the reins after playing on the wing much of his career. The De Anza High graduate averaged 14.1 points and 4.0 assists last season for San Jose City College. “A lot of magazines and reporters, they doubt us,” McFadden said. “But I’m comfortable with my ability and being able to contribute to the team in a lot of ways.“It’s a new role for me to take on – more responsibility, which will make me a better player overall. My coaches have been telling me everything starts with my defensive pressure and my enthusiasm at the point. If I can be stubborn defensively, hopefully it will affect the team.
