Kellogg gets help as McClymonds defeats Skyline

On the surface, it would appear as though the McClymonds High boys basketball team's 78-64 win over host Skyline on Friday was the result of Antonio Kellogg.

The senior guard would certainly have to get at least an assist as he scored 27 points a day after giving a verbal commitment to Connecticut and contained Skyline's Keena Payton after he scored nine of his 17 points in the opening quarter.

But look a little deeper and the reason the Warriors (15-6 overall, 3-1 Oakland Athletic League) remained in a tie with Fremont atop the standings is Phillip Woods and Yahya Abdul-Mateen.

Just ask Kellogg himself.

"They stepped up and pulled off what we needed of them," Kellogg said. "They did what seniors are supposed to do."

With the Titans (13-6, 2-2) focusing much of their attention on Kellogg -- once again, he saw a box-and-one defense for much of the game -- Woods scored 18 points and Abdul-Mateen added 16, including 10 in the first quarter to keep Mack close early on.

"Me and Yahya feed off whatever Antonio does," Woods said. "We all need each other. We all have to come out and score consistently so we can make a run for state."

Mack came in having lost two in a row and this was the first of five consecutive road games for the Warriors. Abdul-Mateen struggled in each of those losses, but responded when Mack needed it most.

"A lot of teams come at us with a box-and-one and we've seen that to beat that, we have to step up our game," Abdul-Mateen said. "That way, it's better for the team, and we all benefit. It takes a lot of pressure off Antonio."

Skyline dominated the Warriors on the glass and outrebounded Mack 17-4 in the second quarter. However, the Titans, who saw post players Jonathan Darwin and Ndubuisi Anyonwu each pick up three first-half fouls, couldn't take advantage, shooting 3-of-20 from the floor in the second quarter.

Mack then took control in the third quarter with a 3-point barrage led by Kellogg.

"It was about that time of the game where I've got to step up for my team," Kellogg said.

Kellogg hit a 3 from NBA distance and drained another for a 50-37 lead. Then, Woods knocked down a 3 for a 53-37 lead before Kellogg made a cross-over dribble and buried his third 3-pointer of the quarter for a 56-39 advantage.

The Warriors led 68-48 with 4:12 to play before Skyline went on a 14-3 run to make it interesting. Mack hit 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the final 1:01 to keep the Titans at bay.

"A lot of their players other than Antonio were making a lot of open shots," Skyline's Tariq Ikharo said. "Their role players stepped up."
