Jason Hope Leads the Elk Grove Lakers to a Regional Title

Jason Hope held the ball in the backcourt as the time ran down on the clock. Once the final buzzer sounded, a sigh of relief was let out by the two coaches, Mickey Hope and Rod Greene. The team had finally reached its initial goal of going all the way.

On September 6th, the Elk Grove Lakers defeated the Solano Magic 6-4 in the Regional Championship game in the JBA (Junior Basketball Association) 1st/2nd grade competitive division. The game was one of the best played defensive battles ever. The Lakers were lead by their leading scorer, Jason Hope who scored 2 points and had 1 assist. His cool on-court demeanor helped calm the team down during the final period.

The road to the championship game was NO cake walk. The Lakers took second place in their Elk Grove JBA league with a 5-2 record. That earned them a second place seed and a 1st round bye in the playoffs. The team’s first playoff game against MacDonald was simply amazing. The team was down by 6 points with 2 minutes left. Jason Hope’s lay-up cut the deficit to 4 points and Tyler Kern’s midrange jumper put the team down by 2 with 10 seconds to go. As the other teams point guard dribbled up the court, center B.J. Osayande stole the ball and dribbled down the court. He pulled up for a shot at the free throw line with no time left. ALL NET! As the 1 minute overtime period passed, neither team had scored. Next up was a sudden death 2nd overtime. This meant that the first team to score was the winner. On the teams third possession Devin Greene, who’s the team’s defensive stopper set a screen for Jason at the top of the key. Jason drove to the right baseline past his man and hit a ten foot jump shot. GAME OVER! In the league championship game, the Lakers defeated the Spurs 14-12. The Lakers were lead by the defensive prowess of Devin Greene who shut down the Spurs leading scorer while Jason Hope and Tyler Kern had 8 and 4 points respectively. In the regional semifinal the Lakers defeated the Notomas Eagles 16-8. Again Jason lead the team in scoring with 6 points and 2 assists while Tyler Kern and Devin Greene had 4 points apiece.

At the seasons end Jason was unanimously voted the teams M.V.P. He led the team in scoring with a 10 point average. He also averaged a little over 2 assists per game. Anytime the team needed a basket it seemed like Jason would always come through. Other top players on the team were Devin Greene. He was the team’s heart and soul on defense. All season long he played with the tenacity of Ray Lewis (Baltimore Ravens) and the defensive skill of Gary Payton (Los Angeles Lakers). Tyler Kern and B.J. Osayande were the team’s forces in the middle. Alex Munguia was also a top player at the small forward position. Other team members were Darius Johnson, Calvin Sawyer, and Mathew Munguia.
